About our Company

Melody headshot.JPG

Welcome! My name is John Donlon, and I am the founder of New Roots. I have been living in Bloomington for over 15 years, and I am proud to call it home. Experiencing every season to its fullest is one of the reasons I love being in Indiana.

I have a degree from Indiana University in Environmental & Sustainability studies, with a focus on agriculture & food systems.

I have worked for several local companies in the green industry over the years -  Oliver Winery, Bloomington Valley Nursery, and Blume Studio Gardens. My coworkers and mentors have given me the knowledge and skill to start my own business, doing great work for everyday people!

At New Roots, we strive to give you the best quality service and attention to detail, so that your property stands out. No corners cut, just hard work and expertise to get the job done right.

Whether you are looking for consistent weekly care to keep your property in tip top shape, have a big planting or removal project, or you just need a one time cleanup, we are the right ones for the job.

Experience in the Green Industry

Oliver Winery

A Bloomington staple, Oliver Winery contains some of the most beautiful gardens in Indiana. This is how I got my start in the green industry. I worked here for a full season keeping the grounds neat and tidy - whether that was mowing, weeding, planting, pruning, mulching - we did it all. I even went out to Creekbend Vineyard to harvest grapes when the time was right!

Bloomington Valley Nursery

Bloomington Valley Nursery is a premiere spot to get high quality plants in Bloomington. I was an employee here for several years, and my plant knowledge grew every day. From beautiful seasonal offerings of annuals to foundational perennials, nice native plants, shrubs, and ornamental trees - this place taught me that there is so much variety and color you can add to a landscape.

Blume Studio Gardens

Blume Studio Gardens was a small family run business that I was fortunate enough to be a part of for several years. My boss really took me under his wing, showing me all of the ins and outs of running a lawn & garden company. I learned first-hand how to completely transform a space - from something wild and overgrown, into a well designed garden space with purpose.
